Nothing reminds you
until the letter arrives.
My Cars App watches your MOT, road tax, insurance, service and driving licence dates, and tells you before they run out. MOT and road tax fill themselves in from DVSA and DVLA — nothing to type, nothing to keep up to date. Free MOT and vehicle checks for any UK registration, including outstanding safety recalls. It also shows fuel prices near you from the government Fuel Finder scheme.
Free to download on both stores.
Why this exists
This app was not a business idea first. It was built because we needed it.
Someone in this house drove for weeks on an MOT that had quietly expired. No letter, nothing on the dashboard, no warning of any kind — the date had simply gone past. In the same house a driving licence photocard ran out, and the road tax lapsed, and the first anyone knew of either was an official letter landing on the mat.
None of that happened through carelessness. It happened because four or five renewal dates sit in four or five different places, none of them talk to each other, and the reminders that do exist arrive by post or not at all. Writing them on a note works right up until the day you stop looking at the note.
So: one screen with every date on it, and a reminder before each one.
What it does
Checks any UK vehicle, free
Type a registration and get the MOT status, expiry date and the full test history from official DVSA records — every test, the mileage recorded at each one, what failed and every advisory — plus the road tax status and renewal date from DVLA. Cars, vans, motorbikes and lorries.
Flags an outstanding safety recall
When a manufacturer finds a serious fault it issues a recall, and the letter goes to the address on file — so a car that has changed hands can carry one unrepaired for years. The check shows what the defect is, when it was issued and which build dates it affects. More about recalls.
Remembers the dates you would otherwise forget
MOT and road tax look after themselves, straight from DVSA and DVLA. Insurance renewal, your next service and your driving licence photocard expiry are the ones only you know, so you add those once. Save up to five vehicles and the app keeps an eye on all of them.
Tells you in good time
Reminders at 30 days, 14 days, 7 days, the day before and on the day — at a time you choose. Not one warning a month out and then silence.
Shows what fuel costs near you
Filling stations must publish their pump prices by law and report a change within thirty minutes. Type a postcode — never your location, which the app never asks for — and see every participating station in range, each grade, and how long ago the price moved. More about fuel prices.
Asks you for nothing
No account, no email address, no phone number. Your vehicles stay on your phone. The only thing that ever reaches our server is the registration you are checking.
