Car insurance renewal reminders

Insurance is the one date on this list that nobody official reminds you about. DVSA will text you about an MOT if you ask it to. DVLA writes to you before your photocard runs out. For insurance there is only your insurer, and your insurer's reminder arrives with a renewal quote attached.

What it costs to let it lapse

Driving uninsured carries a fixed penalty of £300 and 6 penalty points. If the case goes to court the fine is unlimited and you can be disqualified. Police can also seize the vehicle, and in some cases destroy it. Those are GOV.UK's own figures, not ours.

A lapse does not need to be long to be expensive. A policy that ended on Friday and a drive to work on Monday is the same offence as never having insured the car at all.

Can you look up your own renewal date?

Not from any public database, and this is worth being clear about because plenty of sites imply otherwise. askMID will tell you free whether your own vehicle is currently showing as insured on the Motor Insurance Database, which is useful if you are not sure a policy actually started. It does not tell you when the cover ends. That date lives on your certificate, your schedule and your insurer's renewal letter, and nowhere else.

So the app does not pretend to fetch it. You type the date in once, from your documents, and then it is handled: a bar that empties as the year runs down, and reminders 30, 14, 7 and 1 days before, and on the day.

Why the date matters more than it used to

Most policies renew automatically now. That is convenient until the year you meant to shop around and the renewal went through while you were not looking. Knowing the date a month ahead is the whole difference between choosing to renew and being renewed at.

We do not sell insurance, quote for it, or pass your details to anyone who does. The app holds a date on your phone and tells you before it passes. That is all.
